Breathe and Sign, Let’s Talk About It!

I want to pause for a moment to reflect on the profound impact this book and program have had on me. From the start, Marie has been a beacon of light—a guiding presence who saw what I needed before I fully understood it myself.

Our relationship began when I was in a place of deep hurt. One of the first things Marie said to me was, “Norlander, you need business coaching, you need to address toxicity, and you need therapy.” Those words landed with a truth and clarity that I wasn’t ready for at the time, but they sparked a turning point in my life.

    That was three years ago.

Since then, my journey with Marie has evolved from basic coaching to something profoundly more holistic—a true mentorship. Enrolling in the Dreamer Canvas program was the catalyst for this transformation. Through it, I gained deeper insights about myself, learned healthier ways to navigate workplace challenges, and came to understand the importance of dismantling old frameworks to build inclusive, respectful leadership practices.

I have now gone from hiding behind my own unwillingness to be vulnerable with myself to embracing the courage it takes to truly see and accept who I am. Letting go of that guardedness was both challenging and liberating, and it has led me to a place where I can create genuine connections and cultivate meaningful relationships—both at work and in my personal life.

And now, this book has me leveling up—personally and professionally. By applying the insights I’ve gained, I’m breaking through old barriers, fostering a healthier environment around me, and stepping more confidently into a leadership style rooted in empathy and authenticity.

This process wasn’t always easy, but it was absolutely necessary. It taught me how to create space for vulnerability, introspection, and growth—not just for myself, but for those around me. Now, looking back on how far I’ve come, I can say that I am stepping into leadership with a renewed sense of purpose and a healthier mindset.

Thank you, Marie, for illuminating this path and for showing me that true leadership goes hand in hand with healing, empathy, and self-discovery. I will always be grateful for the wisdom and compassion that continue to shape my journey toward a healthier workplace culture—and a healthier life overall.

Marie Deveaux’s From Barriers to Bridges is more than just a leadership guide—it’s a mirror reflecting the hidden struggles many of us endure in the workplace. As I read through her insights on burnout and toxic workplace cultures, I felt as though she had taken my own experiences and laid them out on the page.

At first, I thought I was simply working hard to advance in my career, but over time, the stress became all-consuming. It wasn’t just about being busy; it was about feeling completely drained, unseen, and undervalued. Ms. Deveaux describes burnout as a lack of autonomy, recognition, and psychological safety, and that resonated deeply with me. I found myself constantly trying to meet impossible expectations, yet no amount of effort ever seemed to be enough.

What struck me the most was how burnout doesn’t just stay within the walls of the office—it spills over into every aspect of life. Even when I wasn’t at work, I was thinking about it. The stress followed me home, making it difficult to enjoy time with my family. My patience grew thinner, my sleep suffered, and I constantly felt like I was falling behind, no matter how hard I pushed myself. I started to recognize that my sense of self-worth had become entangled with my productivity, a dangerous cycle that left me feeling exhausted and unfulfilled.

As I read about The Hustler persona, I couldn’t help but see myself in its description. The relentless need to accomplish more, to prove my value through output rather than presence, was something I had internalized for years. Deveaux’s discussion of how marginalized groups, particularly Black women, often feel pressured to “work twice as hard to get half as much” hit particularly close to home. This constant striving wasn’t just about ambition—it was about survival in a system that rarely acknowledges our contributions.

What I appreciated most about this book was that it didn’t just explain why burnout happens—it offered tangible ways to break the cycle. Deveaux presents “bridge behaviors” that encourage a shift from toxic productivity toward healthier, more sustainable ways of working. She emphasizes collaborative decision-making, emotional intelligence, and the radical act of rest—ideas that challenged the mindset I had been conditioned to accept.

The journal prompts throughout the book provided an opportunity for deep self-reflection. They forced me to examine my relationship with work, the behaviors I had adopted to navigate toxic environments, and the fears that kept me from stepping away from burnout-inducing patterns. Deveaux’s focus on psychological safety and shared power made me realize that true leadership isn’t about control or perfection—it’s about fostering environments where people can thrive.

By the time I reached the final pages, I felt a sense of clarity I hadn’t had in years. This book reminded me that my well-being matters just as much as my work. It reinforced that I don’t have to conform to outdated leadership models that prioritize grind culture over human connection. Instead, I can choose to create and seek out workplaces that honor collaboration, care, and sustainability.

For anyone who has ever felt overworked, undervalued, or exhausted by the demands of their job, From Barriers to Bridges offers not only validation but a path forward. Marie Deveaux doesn’t just call for a change in leadership—she calls for a fundamental shift in how we define success. If you’ve experienced burnout and felt its effects long after clocking out, this book will speak to you in ways few others can.

    I highly recommend it.

The book was incredibly convicting, but also very gentle in its delivery. As you read you will see yourself and your colleagues and understand the impact your patterns have, and find great actionable guidance to make more productive choices.

All of us have work to do to see and interrupt harmful patterns that our culture often reinforces. My top behavior was the Pacifier, followed closely by the Critic. What stood out the most for me was the theme of independence. When things get tight, I tend to retreat and handle everything on my own. It really made me reflect on how much of that mindset is at play as I ask myself, ‘Can I really do this all on my own?’
